While talking with the creators of today's small business, I completely fell in love with their story and their gorgeous pottery pieces. I am sure you are going to fall in love a little bit too!
Brian and Naomi Menkis met while both studying art at Messiah University. Brian is a sculptor; Naomi is a painter. Brian became the Studio Art Technician and Gallery Director at Messiah and Naomi taught 2nd to 12th grade art until they started a family. One of the skills Naomi loved teaching most was hand built clay work. She borrowed her dad’s kiln and began working more intently with clay at home.
“It started at the kitchen table,” Naomi told me. She encouraged her husband to join her, and their mutual interest led them to begin wheel throwing, which means building a piece on a pottery wheel. As a sculptor, Brian was used to tactile work and instantly fell in love with wheel throwing. Brian told me, for him, “pottery just clicked.” Brian became the driving force behind turning their passion into a business. They found that even while they were still learning, they were selling their pieces.
They realized that making pottery was something they could do together once their 3 children are asleep. Pottery organically became a labor of love not only to help make ends meet, but to fuel their creative passions as well as strengthen their marriage. They also enjoy bringing their children into the studio to help and learn. Their business has bloomed to include a website, and now they are selling their pieces in local brick and mortar shops.
And how gorgeous is their work?! Most of their pieces are wheel thrown and go through a rigorous process in order to become beautiful works of art. Their mugs and soup mugs are just the thing to help keep us warm with hot cocoa and soup throughout the winter months.
You can find them at www.menkisworks.com and they gave my readers a special code! Use LEGEND10 for 10% off your online order!
If you’re local to Central Pennsylvania, Menkis Works pottery is now officially sold at the Rustic Orchid and the Carlisle Arts and Learning Center.
I've got one more amazing shop to share with you, and I can tell you, one of their products was a complete game changer in keeping my hands toasty while out in the elements! Stay tuned for Part 3 of our winter weather essentials series!
