Winter Weather Essentials - Part 1
To start off the new year, I partnered with 3 truly inspiring artists to share some gorgeous winter weather essentials with you! Over the next week, I'll be showcasing each one and telling you where to find their products! And they may or may not have given me some coupon codes exclusively for my readers!!! All three are small businesses, which I am thrilled to promote! As I got to hear their stories, I found a common thread - love. How perfect to feature quality, handmade artistry created out of love for oneself, love for one's spouse, and love for one's family right before the "big holiday of love!" Everything featured is sure to help keep you warm and cozy all winter long!
Little Hemming Bird
Little Hemming Bird is a custom children’s clothing shop, which was created by my incredibly talented friend, Hannah.
“My story isn’t really the story of a seamstress, but more so of perseverance and awareness.” - Hannah
Hannah came by her love of sewing honestly. Her mom and grandmother both sewed. As a child, she loved sewing but got out of the habit in early adulthood. When Hannah as 17 weeks pregnant with her first child, she suffered from severe prenatal anxiety and depression. She decided to buy an embroidery and sewing machine as a way to cope with her emotions and to keep her busy. The first thing she made was her hospital bag.
“At this point,” she said, “I was not skilled at all. I didn't know how to read patterns or anything.”
When her son was 4 months old, she really started to learn and opened her first shop making newborn outfits for professional photo shoots. During her second pregnancy, Hannah again experienced a lot of prenatal anxiety and depression, which caused her to quit her sewing. “I didn’t touch a machine for an entire year.” The same prenatal anxiety and depression appeared during her third pregnancy. “It was so bad that I ended up in crisis intervention,” she said. Hannah’s coping skill of sewing was put on the back burner so she could simply focus on remaining healthy during pregnancy. “If more women would be open about their struggles it could help someone like me who didn’t know what was happening.”
Recently, when her youngest turned 6 months old, Hannah started sewing again. “This time, I was on fire. I rebranded, and my mission was to donate or bless a mom/expecting mother with something that I made because when I was struggling, it was little things like a swaddle set that helped me look forward and move ahead.” Little Hemming Bird was born – where comfort meets cute.
And cute it is!!! Hannah’s clothing is made out of quality fibers and all of it is CPSC compliant. Everything has either been exempt or tested for lead and flammability. “Most people don't think about the regulations on children's clothes, so erring on the side of caution when purchasing children's clothing and toys from small shops is super important.” Hannah loves making custom items. She often draws up designs and guides a client through the entire process.
One of her favorite things to make is pajamas, and I can see why! She kindly made a pair for my son, and I can’t get over how soft and beautifully made they are! The are made with a yoga waist band for extra comfort and stretch. Jackson refuses to take them off!
I am so incredibly proud of my friend, and so grateful for her vulnerability and willingness to share her story! If you follow my Instagram account, I have mentioned several times the importance of talking about our mental health struggles so that we can support one another!
“Great things come from struggle. I could have easily given up. I was tired, but inside, I chose to push.” - Hannah
Check back later this week for a husband and wife duo who create stunning pieces of art to help keep you warm all winter! Can't wait to show you!
