Wellness and Beauty Favorites
I know you typically come to The Rural Legend for easy DIY's and delicious recipes, but TRL at its core is all about creating your happy. I'm here to show you how to do amazing things without losing your dang mind! Part of achieving that is self care - ways to find time for yourself, refuel and refresh. How many products do we use in a day to help us smell better, look better, feel better? I wanted to share some of my favorite things with you that promote sustainability, better health, and aren't filled with things that aren't good for our bodies. Self care starts with better wellness, and my goal is to make it easier for you to accomplish that!
Personally, I struggle with finding time for myself in a world where I primarily take care of everyone around me. Even as a mental health therapist who preaches self care, it is not always easy for me to do! Focusing on my health is especially challenging because it's easy to push it to the proverbial back burner and focus on other things.
Natural and safe products are really important to me, but it stresses me out trying to find products that actually work AND are truly safe! It's hard to trust companies these days, right?! The labels say all the right things, but you have to be an expert to understand the fine print and verify if it's actually true. So here I am, sharing with you the products I personally use and genuinely love after lots of research and trials so that you can take something off your plate and know you're treating your body well!
I was introduced to Coola years ago and fell in love with their tinted sunscreen. I use it as a very light foundation just to smooth out my complexion a bit. It is the softest product I've ever put on my face! It's like applying silk to your skin! I love that it makes my skin tone more even, but more importantly it's SPF 30. It also has a matte finish so it doesn't make my skin look greasy or oily. Having an all in one product like this helps me save time in my morning routine. Their products are locally sourced, organic, and cruelty free which I love! And I have peace of mind knowing I'm not putting something harmful on my skin.
I also love their mineral sunscreen tinted lip balms and their makeup setting spray (which is also SPF 30!) The setting spray is a great way to reapply a layer of broad spectrum SPF without messing with your makeup, and it prevents my mascara from ending up on the skin below my eyes!
My absolute favorite morning ritual is washing my face with a wash cloth. Soothing warm water opens my pores and sinuses and helps me feel fresh first thing in the morning. It's my first tiny moment of self care in my day. Years ago I learned that while terry cloth towels are super absorbent, they are actually not great for our skin. After some research, I switched over to a super soft MakeUp Eraser and never looked back! Their original cloth (MUE) takes off ALL makeup with just the use of water! The two-sided design not only washes your face, but exfoliates your skin without the need for harsh chemicals! I use mine to exfoliate in the morning and clean off my makeup at night. Most importantly, they are a sustainable product! One MakeUp Eraser replaces 3,600 wipes! They are both machine washable and dermatologist approved. And the company now offers a washable makeup sponge and mini versions of the original "MUE" in a multi pack so you can wash your supply less often! They also come in a rainbow of colors. Can you guess which one is my fav???

Ok, can we all be honest for a minute? We all stink. Not one of you reading this can tell me truthfully your body smells awesome all on its own. Don't worry, I still love you! xoxo
This is a newer product for me, but it works far better than any other all natural deodorant I've ever used. And I have spent a lot of time and money trying out different brands! It is aluminum-free, baking soda-free, and cruelty-free, which I have found in the past, does not always mean I end up BO free! What makes this product even more unique is that it's not just for arm pits. The label says it's for underarms and private parts. It might sound a bit weird, but let's face it, we sweat plenty of other places besides our pits! Lume was also designed by a female OB/GYN to help men and women who struggle with confidence issues due to body odor.
Choosing natural products for my skin and body are really important to my family, but other natural products have left me with rashes or actually made me smell worse. And my husband has very sensitive skin and gets horrible rashes under his arms with the wrong product. Lume doesn't irritate our skin, and I'd say we smell pretty good! You can find them here! They offer free shipping on orders over $20!
DIY Face Serum
There are so many skin care products out there, and it is completely overwhelming trying to find one that is actually good for my skin without spending a bajillion dollars! Again, it's hard to trust companies because so many times I have bought a product that I thought was good for me and then a year later, a study comes out telling me it's actually terrible for my skin! I have started to believe it's just easier to make certain things myself because then I actually KNOW what my body is absorbing!
Before you keep scrolling because you don't have time to make your own facial moisturizer - this is super easy and the ingredients listed below are going to last you a loooong time! So you're saving a ton of money making it yourself! AND, you are going to love how your skin feels! Even through the driest winter months, this serum keeps my skin soft and glowy. Is glowy a word???
So Why These Ingredients?
What is it?
The jojoba plant is a hearty, perennial plant that grows in North America. Not only does it thrive in the harsh, desert climates that could kill most living things, but it also produces a nut with many healing properties.
Why is it beneficial?
It’s an antioxidant
It’s noncomedogenic (meaning it's so similar to the oil (sebum) your body naturally produces that your skin can’t tell the difference! This makes it less likely to build up on your skin and clog your pores, leading to fewer breakouts and less severe acne.)
What is it?
Aloe Vera is a thick, short-stemmed plant that stores water in its leaves. It is best known for treating skin injuries
Why is it beneficial?
it supports the production and release of collagen
it has an antioxidant effect that can help repair sun damage and slow down the aging process of the skin
it protects the skin from the damaging effects of radiation therapy
it contains 98% water, which helps moisturize, soothe, and hydrate the skin
it helps to make the skin more flexible and supple, rather than stiff and leathery
The world of essential oils is vast. I've listed a few of my favorites for facial skin care. Just know, not all essential oils are created the same. I have found that Doterra and Young Living are the most reputable and purest form of essential oils. They may seem pricey, but a bottle is going to last a very long time! I personally use Doterra, but am not affiliated with them for this post.
Frankincense - natural astringent, anti-inflammatory, eliminates unwanted bacteria from the skin, improves skin tone and elasticity
Lavender - lightens skin, reduces wrinkles, soothes dry skin
Geranium - naturally firms skin, boosts skin's natural glow, helps skin cells to regenerate

This one isn't a beauty product, but it has become a huge part of my own wellness journey and I wanted to share that with you.
If you haven't heard of Beach Body, you probably live under a rock. They have been around for a very long time, and over the years they have offered more and more resources for their customers. But for those of you who do not know Beach Body, it is a wellness provider that combines fitness, nutrition AND support. By signing up for Beach Body on Demand, their streaming platform, you have access to their entire extensive library of workouts, nutrition guides, recipes, and free coaching. I have done Beach Body on and off again since my son was born, but I finally committed to the free coaching offered to me last year. You are either assigned to a coach or, if you know a coach, you can request to be assigned to them. A coach leads a group of individuals called a BODgroup. My coach is actually one of my very dear friends, but there are others in my challenge group who were brand new to me.
My challenge group has become part of my family and we meet once a week on zoom to talk about our week and to challenge/encourage one another with our personal goals. There is zero judgment, zero pressure, just pure love and authenticity. Sometimes we do virtual workouts together. Sometimes we meal plan together. Sometimes we just hang out. But what I love about the overall culture of Beach Body is that regardless of your fitness and wellness level, there's something for you. There's even a 21 day meditation series to help you reduce stress and anxiety.
Agreeing to become a part of a BODgroup, or challenge group, meant that I was putting effort into my own self care and carving out time for myself when I am often focused on my husband, son, and our home. And trust me, I'm not awesome at doing that! Even if you don't choose to sign up for Beach Body, I encourage you to find an outlet where you are challenged and encouraged to make goals and work toward them to better yourself!
A subscription to Beach Body on Demand is $99 for the year, which is way cheaper than any gym membership, and they offer tons of resources you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home. They offer a 14 day free trial which you can find here!
In our society there's a lot of pressure to do it all and have it all, but that often means we sacrifice having time to recharge and unwind. Even though a few beauty products might not seem like self care, making good choices for your body means looking better and feeling better - and that is a huge part of self care!
I hope you find some inspiration here and maybe you choose to try one or all of my favorites! Do you have an absolute favorite product that helps you promote your own self care? I'd love to hear about it!
