5 Easy Tips for Organizing Seasonal Décor

If you love to swap out décor for the seasons and holidays as much as I do, you probably have a nice size collection of items that need a home off-season. I have heard from a few of you that decorating for the holidays - no matter which one - can feel overwhelming because you simply don't know how to organize it all and store it away for the year.

I put together a list of easy tips to help reduce your stress and make it easy to grab what you need when you're ready to give your home a seasonal refresh.

How To organize Your seasonal decorations

1. Choose a place to store your décor

Whether it's an attic, basement, or closet; establish a designated area to store your items. And make it some place convenient! We have an attic above our garage and one above our son's room. The attic above the garage is much easier to access, so that it where we store the seasonal items we rotate through annually.

If you're low on storage, be mindful about how much décor you purchase! You can find some great ways to minimize the amount of "stuff" you own and still make your home feel special season to season here.

2. Contain seasonal décor

Keep your seasonal décor together in a bins or boxes. Plastic totes are a miracle invention! They keep all of your special memories and décor protected from water and help keep things organized. You can also take this a step further and keep like items together. Christmas linens and kitchen décor go together, candles and holders go together, etc...

3. Use different totes for different seasons

For my décor, each season or holiday has different colored totes. Most stores offer different colors of totes seasonally, like red and green at Christmas time. This way you immediately know which totes to grab when it's time to decorate! My sweet husband brings all of our totes out of the attic each season, so I just tell him, "grab the blue ones," and he doesn't have to sort through everything.

4. Label, Label, Label

This may seem a bit time consuming, but trust me, it will save you so much time in the long run! Unless you're using tiny clear bins, it's difficult to know exactly what you put into each tote. I have a large label on the side of each tote so I know exactly what is inside without having to shuffle totes and open everything up.

I can't tell you how many times the one thing I wanted to grab was in the tote on the bottom of a 4-tote-stacked tower! This also makes it much easier to pack everything away at the end of the season because you have already established what gets stored together!

5. Look at what you have

BEFORE beginning to decorate for a season or holiday, I pull everything out to see what I have to work with. It's funny how quickly I forget what I own! I set up a large folding table and unpack everything so it is all easily visible. This is also a great opportunity to begin grouping things together before deciding where to place it. Think of it like a mini staging area!
