4 Year House-iversary Tour

Four years ago today, we bought a 1980-built house and moved to the suburbs! I thought it would be fun to show you how far this little house has come in the years that we have called her home!

Front Exterior

If you saw my porch makeover post a few weeks ago, you know that we plan to paint the brick to match our new siding color (hopefully next year!) to update the exterior, but man, this house has already come a long long way!

One of the best things we chose to do right from the beginning was replace the front door. The original door had no window, so the entry was dark and closed off.

Adding board and batten to the entryway also made it feel significantly bigger and is much more welcoming! You can read all about that transformation here!

A few years ago, we added subway tile backsplash, which felt intimidating, but actually ended up being a pretty simple process!

Family Living Area

Once we moved all of our furniture into this house I realized how narrow this space actually was. While it technically ticks the box for open concept, it has been a challenging space to style as a family room, breakfast area and kitchen all in one.

Painting the brick fireplace was also one of those projects I was super nervous about - because you can't un-paint brick! But I have never regretted the decision! It makes our space feel SO much bigger!

Dining Room

I think this is the most dramatic transformation simply based on COLOR! This is the most asked about paint color in our home and I love love love this moody, vintage space!

paint color is Benjamin Moore Nocturnal Gray

Play Room

The previous owners had attempted to transform this room into a bedroom by adding a large closet and narrowing the doorway between this room and the dining room. It was an obvious choice for Jackson's playroom because it's so easy to close the doors when we don't want to see the mess! Recently, we made over this space and transformed the closet into a Lego table! You can read all about this 3 part makeover below!

Eventually, when a playroom is no longer need, we will make this space a more formal living room.

J's Bathroom

A few months ago, I made over this bathroom on a tight budget with a few clever DIY's and some paint. The full makeover is here.

Master Bedroom

This is a space I don't share too often because we haven't done much work in here yet. You can see paint samples on the trim in the image below. I have lots of ideas, but other areas of our home were much more of a priority to transform first.

We sacrificed quite a few things on our wish list for this house because of this backyard! Slowly, we are making the interior of this house feel like our dream home, but you can't expand your land! This is truly our happy place, and over the years we have transformed this space into our own little oasis. Our backyard is surrounded on 2 sides by large trees, which give us the privacy to feel like we are in the middle of nowhere but still only 5 min from Target, lol! Eventually, we will be adding new fencing to the side that is not currently private and our retreat will feel much more secluded. This past winter we had a dear friend put in this incredible patio, which you can read all about here. Sitting out here with family and friends and admiring all of our landscaping and garden is pure Heaven!

Tim and I built this sunken firepit patio before The Rural Legend was even a thought in my brain, but if you are interested in building your own firepit, we are always happy to answer questions! Just reach out!

I hope you enjoyed our little house tour! It was so fun putting all of these before and afters together and truly honoring how much love we have put into this home. It is far from the way that we want it to look yet, but then again, I don't know if we'll ever stop pouring our hearts and souls into projects here - because it brings us joy!
