How To Transition Your Home from Fall to Christmas

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

For The Rural Legend, it's the most wonderful time of the year! Yes, it's only early November, but bringing out all of our Christmas décor brings us so much joy that we're not going to fight the urge to deck the halls a little early!

Whether you're on team "Christmas starts November 1st," or "Christmas comes after Thanksgiving," these easy décor ideas are perfect for the late fall season and will seamlessly blend into your Christmas decorations - when you're ready for them!

1. Organic Décor

Hold onto those dried florals and grasses from your fall décor! These fluffy pampas grasses are a great addition to early holiday decorating!

Dried fruits like these easy DIY dried oranges are a simple way to bring warmth and a little color to your home. Plus they smell amazing! Fill a bowl with dried slices or string them on twine for a gorgeous garland. I love to hang them above my kitchen window and across my mantle mixed in with eucalyptus and evergreen swags. These garlands pictured here were made last year! After the holiday season, I hung them in my basement and they held up perfectly!

Don't feel like a DIY? Take a stroll to collect pinecones and acorns to fill a gorgeous wooden or footed bowl for a simple but stunning centerpiece!

2. Cozy Textures

You know I'm a big fan of pillow covers as an easy way to swap in new styles. This year, I chose warm-toned faux leather covers paired with velvets and chunky tassels. Mixing masculine and feminine styles is always a classic way to pull a look together. As we approach Christmas, I will add in a few holiday touches with a chunky red blanket and a few holiday pillows.

I also swapped in thicker throw blankets to keep us warm and cozy in the evenings.

3. Jewel Tones and Metallics

This year, I am all about setting a cozy, moody tone for our home. Rich, jewel tones and vintage gold accents feel warm and cozy as the days get a little darker. I can't wait to add the ambiance of Christmas tree lights to this space!

4. Woodland Décor

PSA: trees are not just for Christmas! Tree décor is a perfect example of how to transition your home from one season to the next. I love arranging trees in a wide array of styles from my grandmother's antique ceramic trees to my modern mercury glass ones. These wooden trees are a new addition to our home this year and I love how the warm wood plays against the rest of the collection. Arrange them in odd numbers in varying heights.

A lot of my plants will move to a location with better lighting for the winter, so in their place I filled woven baskets and crocks with mini artificial trees.

5. Evergreens and Branches

Christmas trees are one of the biggest icons of the Christmas season, but evergreen swags, garlands, and wreaths also make awesome late fall and winter décor!

Simple, unadorned evergreen garlands are an easy way to add texture and color to your home. I chose eucalyptus for my mantle this year because I love that dark blue-green color! Closer to Christmas, I'll layer in extra holiday garlands, but for now I just love the simple elegance!

Hang a dried boxwood or evergreen wreath in an unexpected place, like on a mirror for added depth and texture.
