Affordable Art and Craft Storage Ideas

Last week I revealed our major basement makeover complete with family room and craft space. I wanted to spend more time giving you a tour of the craft and storage area because there are so many affordable aspects to this transformation that make it extra special.

We made our store-bought laundry cabinets and our bookshelf look more high end by painting them the same color as the walls and adding trim to add depth. You can read all about that here! I also wanted to give the INSIDES of these pieces a makeover too so they would be much more functional for us.

Originally, I stored all of our art and craft supplies inside the cabinets and they always seemed to end up in the wrong mismatched bins, or in reality, all over the house! I personally think art supplies are aesthetically gorgeous, so I decided to display them on our newly painted bookshelf in clear acrylic bins - form AND function!

I did the same thing with my son's LEGO when we gave his playroom a refresh this past winter. I'm already finding that with all of my son's art supplies easily visible and easily removable from the shelves, he is keeping things more organized and putting the bins back where they belong.

And I just love how all of the bold rainbow colors pop against the moody blue and striped wallpaper! I also utilized 2 antique crates I already owned to store coloring books and other projects on the bottom shelf and baskets higher up for more educational materials and glue.

In the past 6 months, my 6 year old has become quite the artist (all the mama pride!) He loves to display his artwork so I wanted this craft area to serve as a mini gallery for him as well. I found these gold floating frames on CLEARANCE at Home Goods and we can easily switch out his artwork whenever he wants. I also hung 2 thrifted antique gold frames on the back of the bookshelf (top shelf) and layered more of his art and family photos in front. I love the peek of stiped wallpaper behind the artwork!

With all of the art and craft supplies out of the cabinets, I had much more space for other "less pretty" items to be stored behind cabinet doors! I corralled toys inside inexpensive woven baskets from Target and used an assortment of bins we already owned, but made sure they coordinated with one another. I dedicated one cabinet to my son, one to home décor for me, and the last one for family games and workout gear. |

Overall, the space is much more organized than it every was before, and sorting smaller items into bins and baskets helps the cabinets feel less cluttered. Don't miss my round up of our absolute favorite art supplies and storage ideas below!
